Mario Mandzukic joins Spanish champions Atlético Madrid

Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic has swapped German champions Bayern Munich to join Spanish La Liga winners Atlético Madrid on a 4 year deal. Mandzukic will be the man to replace Diego Costa who joined Chelsea earlier this summer for £32m.

Mandzukic scored 33 goals in 54 Bundesliga appearances after joining from Wolfsburg for €13m in June 2012. Goal.com believe this deal is worth around €22m for the 28 year old after he was told he could leave as Robert Lewandowski signed for Bayern Munich on a free transfer.

Mario Mandzukic has made 51 caps for his native Croatia including their 3 group games at this year’s World Cup. He scored twice in the 4-0 drubbing of Cameroon but was unable to prevent his country’s elimination at the hands of Mexico.

This deal appears to be good business for all involved as Bayern Munich get a reasonable fee for a player surplus to requirements whilst Atleti get a proven goalscorer who you can trust upfront.

Atleti will have to be active in this transfer window as their defence of the La Liga title will be made harder with Real Madrid and Barcelona both linked to a number of high profile players.
